Some pics to share from the last couple weeks...

I DVR Martha Stewart every day, I always look at the info before I play the episode....I did not watch this episode...I have no interest in learning how to make "Chilled CRAP Salad"...YUCK!! But, it still makes me giggle!
Susan and I went to the Humboldt Botanical Gardens....what a relaxing morning! The Iris's were just starting to pop out!
My friend Leanne's (middle) son got married on the 16th. You should have seen our faces when Brock told everyone he wanted to use antlers in the centerpieces...but it worked out. When Brock wasn't looking...we took this picture!!! He did not want anyone to mess with the antlers!!!

Bike update...

Lee called me after going to the Honda shop, and said although they do not know how the damage to the oil filter happened...they are getting him a new one, they gave him a paper filter to use while we wait and replaced a bolt that got stripped as well. I am pretty sure they never want to see us again! I am happy, Lee said he was happy with this morning's results as well.

Lee's damn bike....

The oil filter

Ugh...I am so pissed off, I need to vent a little!

So, we pick up Lee's bike this afternoon. She sounds better than she did the last couple times we heard her. Lee rides her home...she is ok, not great but ok. Lee has been without her a total of six weeks since February....three weeks to get her big repairs done and another three weeks to figure out why she almost made me a widow (she stalled while Lee was on the freeway). Lee gets ready to change the oil...because he bought some special type of oil. Lee has changed the oil in his bike a million times. The last time her oil was changed, it was done at the dealership when we had the big repair done (they replaced all the seals when they worked on the crankcase). Lee drains the oil and goes to remove the oil filter...we had purchased a reusable oil filter a couple years ago, it was $70. Since it was pricey, Lee babies this part...it is maintained and cleaned perfectly with each oil change...and like the bike, looks brand new.

Well...not anymore!

Above, are the pictures I just took of it....it looks like someone stepped on it (the oil filter) and put it back into the bike. I asked Lee if maybe over-torquing the wrench would do this type of damage...no, because there is a spring to keep that from happening. This is not a paper filter, it is a metal filter...built to stand the test of time. We (my dad and us) spent $1800 to fix this bike....at a Honda dealership....I am sick to my stomach....I am pissed. Lee will be there when they open tomorrow...oil filter in hand, and they had better resolve the issue....we can't take Lee's bike back there...if they are willing to put a piece that messed up back into the bike...I am not comfortable letting them touch it again. I feel like we have taken a couple steps forward and three back...with the price of gas, we need this bike to work. I am upset and I can only imagine what Lee feels. I guess we are back to ordering parts online (crossing our fingers that the delays in getting parts from Japan are resolved soon)....we have a part already on back-order until May 24th! Thankfully it is not an essential part.

So....cross your fingers that we can get this issue resolved and get Lee and the bike back on the road!

Much love.

A little Tuesday fun....

Lee and I, at the photo booth they had at the wedding we went to last Saturday!!!!

Twenty Four Years....

Late last month marked a pretty big day in Lee's Coast Guard career....he went over 24 years of active duty....thats 8760 days....he has about 11 years of sea time, thats 4015 days away from his family, not to mention the year spent in Bahrain, a year or more in training (away from his family again...and training never stops, he gets more every year)....so needless to say, I am pretty grateful for those days when we just sit on the couch and do nothing. The above picture is Lee receiving his 8th Good Conduct award.

Lee and I went to my friend Leanne's (and her husband Mac) son's wedding. Their son Brock married a beautiful girl named Susan...it was the perfect Ferndale wedding and reception. I cried during the wedding....wondering what it would have been like to see Mason get married, have the mother son dance..you know the drill, I have expressed it before. It was fun to be a part of the fun festivities....they had a photo booth there and Lee and I took fun pictures, we danced to a slow song...I cannot remember the last time we did that, it was wonderful. I love that Lee will let me drag him to these type of things.

This week is Elliott's spring break.....we have nothing planned. We want to get a few pictures taken of him, so I can make his graduation photos...so we are hoping for at least one sunny day. He wants them taken at the beach.

Happy Spring!!!!

Recap of Arizona...

Thank goodness we have enough pets...or this little cutie would have come home with me in my purse, it is an Italian Greyhound puppy, we saw at the mall!
The Horizon plane that took me there...with its UW Huskies paint job!

Arizona was really nice, even though I brought some Humboldt rain with me! I was pretty nervous...the last time I flew was when Judy and I went to Vegas, 5 years ago! I settle into my seat on a plane that sorta feels like a flying Winnebago...with a lot less room! I am sitting next to a gentleman, who introduces himself as Leonard....he has that weird beard, 4 inches of whiskers that grow from the chin...odd, but whatever! We actually talked the whole way to LAX, about 2 hours....he laughed at me when during some turbulence, I grabbed the seat in front of me! We were on the same flight to Phoenix, so together we figured out the secret squirrel shuttle that will get you from one terminal to another without going through security again, and had some lunch together before the next flight. It was pretty fun.

I made in to Phoenix, and said my goodbyes to Leonard...and finally got my voicemail messages saying Chris was a little delayed. That turned out ok, since I needed to find my way to her terminal. That took a while... Anyway, Chris was about a half hour later than we had planned...so we headed to the car rental, so she could pick up our car for the weekend.....too bad they have security...we may have taken a new Camaro for a joy ride!! From there, we take our rumbling tummies to dinner....Texas Roadhouse, amazing rattlesnake bites (a version of jalapeno poppers), yummy steak...I was a very full and happy camper! We checked in to our hotel and settled in for the night....I was pretty tired, and went to bed kinda earlier than I thought.

Friday, we had the morning (breakfast at Cracker Barrel) and early afternoon to ourselves, with plans to meet Chris' grandma at 4pm. My request was to hit the mall. This mall was huge (Arrowhead Towne Center).....and had every store I could think of! I finally got to go inside a Yankee Candle store!!! I hit my favorites...Macy's and Sephora for a quick walk around. We stopped at a pet store full of puppies....I fell in love with a tiny Italian greyhound puppy. He was so cute...and so small! Thank goodness we already have Key, Texas and Lil' Kitty (who acts more like a dog than a cat)...because I could have carried him in my purse!! We made our way to where Barbara (Chris' grandma) lives, a beautiful retirement center. She may be 104 years old, but she is all there! She has a wicked sense of humor and I loved getting to hang out with her! She was an absolute delight! We finished our visit and hit the Cheesecake Factory on the way back to the hotel....for dinner and a nice slice of red velvet cheesecake. YUM!!! We watched tv in Chris' room and sipped some Skinnygirl margaritas....it was fun!

Saturday, Chris did not feel very well in the morning...so she rested. I walked to the coffee place, near the hotel and grabbed a latte and a scone, then came back and had some quality time with a book, and read until she was ready to go see Barbara again. We had another great visit with her. I got a little teary as we sat at dinner, and wondered about my grandma...I miss her. I miss my mom too, she would have thought the story about my new buddy Leonard was pretty funny! We ended the weekend food crawl with a meal from Black Bear Diner....their biscuits are delicious!

The weekend ended all too quickly when my alarm went off at 3:30am on Sunday morning...my flight left at 6. Chris and I said our goodbyes, as she dropped me off in front of the terminal on the way to return the car....I thanked her for an outstanding weekend!! By noon, I was home again. It really was a lot of fun, to get to spend time with Chris and to get away. I enjoyed every minute of it!

Thanks again Christine for EVERYTHING!!!!!

An old picture of Lee...

I married this cutie patootie!!!

Tomorrow....

Tomorrow, I am headed to Arizona......for a couple days. Days that I have decided will be worry free....no worrying about a government shutdown-and no pay checks, no worrying about Lee's bike still being in the shop-AGAIN!!, let go of my worries over Libya and Japan, no worrying about this, that and the other. I am going to enjoy these days with Christine....because they are few and far between. Ok....I am a little worried about flying....only because I am a grown up now, and it scares me a little!! When I was a kid... we flew a lot, due to my Dad's job with Western and then Delta. When my dad retired, I started not to like flying as much...I always thought the planes were safer because in some way, my dad had touched them.

Of course, this week there are reports all over the news about fatigue in airplanes....ugh. I can do this....Lee has flown all over the dang world, I can fly one state over. My bag has been packed since Chris purchased our tickets....and it is ready to go. The fridge is full of easy "boy" food. The laundry mountain is down to a small hill....I am good to go!!

This afternoon, Elliott has a track meet in Eureka! Yeah!!! I am excited. I hope to get some more pictures...for a future blog entry. He has been burning the candle at both ends...with studying (only a little more than 2 months until he graduates) and track practice. It makes me happy to see him take a moment to play a video game.

Like I don't already have a lot on my mind...

This topic has been on the back burner of my mind...because I chose not to believe the chuckleheads in DC would do this to the military.....I have seen it on blogs and public forums, but it scares me when I see it on CNN.

Pentagon: Government shutdown threatens military families

Washington (CNN) -- The Department of Defense says that if the government shuts down for an extended period, troops including those fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq will not be paid on time, according to a senior defense official.

The threat adds to the pressure the Pentagon is trying to put on Congress to pass a proper defense budget, rather than the continuing resolutions it has operated under for the last few months. The resolutions fund the Department of Defense at a lower rate.

"If the continuing resolution expires, we have no money except for activities we can say are exempt as permissible by law, on the grounds of national security," the senior defense official said. He is unnamed because he wasn't authorized to speak on the record.

Officials insist the operations -- including the two wars, Libya and Japan -- would be not affected but it would certainly impact military families.

If the federal government shuts down, "you could have forces deployed in the field, with their families back home, and no one's getting paid. And that could be an issue," the defense official said.

If a shutdown were to last beyond the next pay period of April 15, the official says U.S. troops would not get paid on time.

This is a stark contrast to 1995, when military personnel continued to work and were paid. The official says unless Congress and the president specifically reach agreement otherwise, "some troops who expect a paycheck might not get it on time." The official says troops would receive back pay when funding is restored.

The official says the Pentagon is actively planning for contingencies, but "we'll know a lot more in the next 24 hours," when the president and congressional leaders meet to discuss the budget impasse.

"The fact that our armed forces, including troops in combat, would not be paid during a government shutdown underscores the seriousness of this issue. That's one of the many reasons the House has done its work and passed a funding bill for the remainder of the year," said Michael Steel, spokesman for House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

The chairman of the House Armed Services said the warning is "getting ahead of ourselves," saying he hoped the budget impasse is resolved soon.

"They would get the pay, the problem is they wouldn't get it when they plan on getting it," Chairman Buck McKeon, R-California, said on Monday. "I don't even want to contemplate that because to think we would have our young men and women over on the front lines putting their lives on the line, with their families at home with bills to pay that don't get their paycheck, I just think that's really going too far. I think we are mature enough to get this thing fixed."

As to who actually comes to work in the event of a shutdown, the official says all operations would be broken down into two categories: exempt and nonexempt. Exempt activities include any operations dealing with national security and safety of human life, and would continue to function as normal. That includes anything to do with fighting the wars, long-range planning and deployments among others.

Nonexempt operations could be commissaries, certain supply depots and nonessential maintenance. Certain contractors will continue to operate because the Department of Defense has already paid them.

The Pentagon is in the final stages of figuring out what is exempt and nonexempt from a shutdown, according to two Pentagon officials, who were not authorized to speak on the record.

"The guidelines will go out to each of the services and will be pretty broad. It will be up to managers and commanders to give detail to the orders, and decide which of their personnel is exempt," the official said. Managers will be prevented from simply declaring that all their manpower and operations should keep functioning without pay, the official said: "At any level of the chain of command, you will expect challenges to decisions made as to what is exempt and nonexempt."

While troops and civilian workers would not be paid during an extended shutdown, all troops and certain civilians will still have to work, as part of national security operations. The troops are guaranteed back pay if they miss any checks. The civilians' back pay depends on congressional authorization.

The next pay date is April 15, when troops and civilians will at the very least be paid all the money they earned through April 8. After April 8, there would be no pay without a federal budget.
