Feeling pretty safe here in housing....they brought
the boats they could trailer into housing, just in case the tidal surge was bad.
Oh boy...what a morning! We were woken up by Lee's cell phone beeping at 1:50am...he received messages from the Air Station saying there was a Tsunami warning....which immediately woke us up. A warning means it is for real! Yikes! So we got up to see what was going on and CNN reported news of the devastating earthquake in Japan. The video footage of the quake and Tsunami are very frightening. Having been in earthquakes and studied geology in college...8.9 on the Richter scale is terrifying...I cannot imagine what that was like and they also reported that the earthquake lasted minutes not seconds!!!
The Tsunami sirens went off here....hearing them when you know it is not a drill is scary. They evacuated a lot of the low lying places in Humboldt county, especially the Arcata bottoms and King Salmon. They also did a larger evacuation up north in Crescent City. Crescent City was devastated by a Tsunami in the mid 60's....so they take every watch and warning very seriously. School was cancelled for Eureka city schools today...we are used to snow days from Washington, so this is a little different. Lee is on stand-by waiting to go to work...he has been awake for hours and is currently taking a nap on the couch downstairs. We are missing out on Elliott's first track meet...I am sure it will be rescheduled.
We are expected to get larger than normal waves for a couple more hours. Outside though...the birds are singing and it is a beautiful Friday morning.
