Poulsbo yesterday...it was a dark and gray day, but sharing a memory I had made with my mom (there is a bakery there that is sweeter than sweet, and my mom took me there many years ago) with Lee made what could have been a sad day, a really special day.
Now back to Christmas memories...the years we spent stationed in Humboldt completely changed how we celebrate the holiday. In Humboldt you are busy starting the weekend before thanksgiving...it starts with hospitality night in Ferndale, one of my favorite things! The stores are open late and every one just strolls through and shops when needed and window shops even more. The night always ended with a bag of goodies from Sweetness and Light! That event is followed a week or two later by the tree lighting at the end of Main Street in Ferndale as well, that includes caroling, cookies and a big crowd. My favorite event ended up being the lighted trucker parade in Eureka, the last four years we hosted our friends with big bowls of warm chili in our bellies, we warmed up and then walked a couple blocks from our house to the parade route. While waiting impatiently for the parade to begin, we laughed, gossiped and enjoyed just being a fun group of friends. The last event is usually the tractor parade in Ferndale, most of the time it rains for this parade! It can be considered a display of which dairyman had a really good year...my Ferndale friends will appreciate that snarky comment. I cannot get enough of a tiny calf on a "float" sparkling with Christmas lights.
I loved how much these events meant spending time with the friends we considered family...I have been missing them very much lately!!!
